Dr. Z MAZ 18 Junior with reverb 1x12

Dr. Z MAZ 18 Junior 1x12 with reverb

The MAZ 18 Junior 1×12 combo with reverb is one of the most popular amps in the impressive Dr. Z lineup. It is in stock now at Woodsy’s Music in Kent Ohio.

The MAZ 18 Jr. is an 18 watt class A design driven by two EL84 output tubes. The preamp section consists of four 12AX7, one 12AT7 and the recitfier is a GZ34.

The controls, as with all Dr. Z designs, are simple and to the point. You get a very musical sounding 3-band EQ (bass, mid, treble) and the Dr. Z Cut control. The cut control  (like the tone control on the Carmen Ghia amps) is a bright-to-the-right, warm-to-the-left type of tone shaping. Dr. Z suggests, and most users agree, that setting the bass, mid and treble to taste first, then dialing in the Cut control, works best.

Just a great sounding guitar amp, really – detailed, responsive and full. Extremely versatile too. Come in for a test drive of the Dr. Z MAZ 18 Junior at Woodsy’s Music in Kent Ohio.

Roger Lewis of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band

The Dirty Dozen Brass band from New Orleans, LA rolled through Kent on the 22nd of September to play at the legendary Kent Stage.  We were paid a visit by the Bari Saxophonist of the group Roger Lewis.  While we were happy to see him, we were upset to learn that his horn had become damaged during his travels.

With only two hours left before the gig, our repair technicians Brad Wagner and Everett Beeman were able to get it into playing condition.  Here are some pictures of the action:

The show sounded great and the sound quality was amazing thanks to our sound guys!  Roger and his horn sounded great!

Be sure to check out the Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s website for music, bios, and tour dates

Dr. Z Carmen Ghia 1×12 Combo

Dr Z Amps at Woodsy's Music Kent, Ohio

Dr. Z Amps now at Woodsy’s Music in Kent Ohio including the Carmen Ghia combo. Second only to the MAZ 18 on the list of Dr. Z’s most popular amps, the Carmen Ghia combo is 18 watts of pure tube tone.

The Carmen Ghia is powered by two EL84 with two preamp tubes (5751, 12ax7) and a 5Y3 rectifier. Controls include volume and tone. Yep. Volume and tone, that’s our kind of amp! Comes stock with a Celestion G12-H30.

The tone control is really what makes the Carmen Ghia much more than a simple tone/volume tube setup. Spin that tone knob around and you’ll go from very bright and funky on the left to big punchy and meaty on the right. much more than just a “roll of the highs” tone control. Very versatile, and still easy to use.

If you’ve not really experienced what folks talk about when they say a tube amp is “responsive,” play through a Carmen Ghia and you’ll know immediately what they mean. Every change in guitar volume, pick attack and pickup selection can be felt through the amp. It’s a pleasure to play through.

See the Dr. Z Carmen Ghia 1×12 combo and other great tube amps at Woodsy’s Music in Kent, Ohio.

JHS Pedals Double Barrel Dual Overdrive

JHS Double Barrel Dual Overdrive Effects pedal

JHS Double Barrel Overdrive

The JHS Double Barrel dual overdrive is a great sounding double pedal with the added unique feature of being able to have both effects on and dictate which comes first in the signal chain.

The left side of the JHS Double Barrel is the JHS Morning Glory overdrive, a very nice transparent overdrive with tons of headroom and capable of light to medium gain sounds.

The right side is the JHS take on a classic TS808 overdrive. As with all of the JHS pedals, the tone control is extremely useful and varied. You can get a bunch of great tones out of this pedal. Frankly it’s hard to make it sound bad. Very cool.

Everett Beeman: Brass Repair Expert

When this tuba was brought to us the bell was completely crushed.  The pistons were bent and the valve casings were out of round.  The tuba’s lead pipe was almost completely right-angled as well!  Everett repaired all of these problems by hand and removed dents with our magnetic dent balls.

JHS Pedals Banana Boost Ohio

JHS Banana Boost

JHS Banana Boost

Woodsy’s Music in Kent Ohio is now the only Ohio dealer for JHS pedals. Our first shipment included the Banana Boost, a very versatile tone shaping and boost tool that would benefit just about any player’s rig.

The Banana Boost has two controls; volume and Sweep, or range. Volume is pretty self explanatory, but it does provide plenty of gain to give your amp a significant push.

The Sweep control is something you’ve probably not experienced before. When turned to the left it behaves like a vintage treble boost, rendering everything from an almost AM radio tone to very bright sparkle to just a nice high end presence when you get up close to 12 o’clock.

Past 12 o’clock to the right gives you a full range boost, big, full and powerful. Like all the JHS stuff we’ve played through, it’s just very musical sounding. Doesn’t seem to alter the natural sound of your guitar, just make it bigger. Never has one knob done so much with tone.

See this and all the great JHS pedals at Woodsy’s Music in Kent, Ohio.

Local Music Spotlight: Brad Wagner Quartet – Bernie’s Tune

Brad Wagner – Bari Sax

Sam Blakeslee – Trombone

Kurt Kotheimer – Bass

Seth Rogers – Drums

Brad Wagner is a repair technician at Woodsy’s as well as a gifted saxophonist. He is playing on a Keilwerth Baritone Saxophone and a Jody Jazz mouthpiece. Woodsy’s does not have any pro Keilwerth’s in stock but we are a dealer and can special order one for you today! We have a large selection of Jody Jazz mouthpieces in stock. Bring your horn in and try one out!

Sam Blakeslee is a recent graduate of Youngstown State University. He is playing on a King 3B from the early 70′s. Our brass technician Everett Beeman rebuilt this horn for Sam and he sounds great on it! Everett replaced any ruined parts, removed all of the lacquer and removed all dents. He then rebuilt the entire main slide and put on a custom finish. Call the store or come in any time to talk to Everett about your options with your brass instrument.

Kurt Kotheimer is a bass player currently living in Cleveland, OH after recently re-locating from San Francisco.  He has toured the US, Canada and Europe with a multitude of different ensembles.  He has quickly become one of the most in demand bass players in the NE Ohio area.  In this video Kurt is playing a Herold Jaeger that was made in Czechoslovakia circa 1933.  Though we do not carry these basses, our brass and strings technician Everett Beeman would be happy to assist in finding an instrument that is comparable.  He is playing Evah Pirazzi and Oliv bass strings which we stock.  Woodsy’s is a Gallien-Krueger dealer.  Kurt is using a GK MB150 amp that we can order for you.

Seth A. Rogers is quite the drummer.  He holds a masters degree from Youngstown State University and is a staple in the Ohio jazz scene.  Currently, Seth teaches percussion and theory at Denison University.  He also leads a variety of ensembles including the Latin Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Percussion Ensemble, and the Balinese Angklung Gamelan Dwara Udyan.  In this video he is playing a Yamaha Maple Custom Drum Kit.  Come in today and try one out!
